What is Long-Term Care?
Long-term care refers to a variety of services that support individuals who are no longer able to care for themselves independently due to chronic illness, disability, memory loss, or other age-related conditions. Unlike short-term care, which focuses on recovery and rehabilitation, long-term care is ongoing and designed to meet both medical and non-medical care needs over an extended period.
Services may include:
- Assisted living
- Assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs) like bathing, dressing, and toileting
- Skilled nursing care and medical monitoring
- Personal care and medication management
- Physical therapy and other therapeutic services
- Social and recreational activities that promote engagement and wellness
At McKnight Place, we deliver these long-term care services in a welcoming, homelike setting, offering peace of mind to residents and their family members.
Is Long-Term Care Right for Your Loved One?
Every individual is different, and so are their care needs. Long-term care may be the right choice if your loved one:
- Has experienced significant cognitive or physical decline
- Needs assistance with most or all ADLs
- Has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia
- Requires skilled nursing care or monitoring for chronic health conditions
- Is no longer able to live safely at home—even with home health care or family caregivers
Even if you’re exploring retirement communities or nursing home care elsewhere, our care team at McKnight Place can still help you assess your loved one’s eligibility and walk you through available care options. We are happy to help!

Understanding the Cost of Long-Term Care
The cost of long-term care varies depending on the level of support needed, the type of accommodations selected, and the services required. While Medicare and Medicaid can help cover certain health-related services for eligible individuals, they do not typically cover long-term assisted living. However, Medicare may assist with short-term skilled nursing care or medical services following a hospital stay.
McKnight Place is a private-pay community.
We accept some long-term care insurance (LTC) policies for skilled nursing and assisted living, and traditional Medicare may help cover medical services as part of a resident’s short-term care plan. We do not accept Medicaid across any of our services.
Once again, we want to stress that McKnight Place is a private-pay community, but we encourage families to speak with their health insurance providers, financial advisors, or the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for additional information on financial assistance, annuities, or life insurance options that may help cover long-term care.
