Moving into McKnight Place: An Interview with Mary Kidwell

Moving into McKnight Place: An Interview with Mary Kidwell

What is moving into McKnight Place like for new residents?

Learn the answer to that and more in this interview with McKnight Place move-in coordinator, Mary Kidwell, in which the moving-in process is discussed in detail.

Q: How long have you been with McKnight Place Assisted Living?

MK: I started working for The Gatesworth properties in 2000, when they opened up their West Wing. Similarly, McKnight Place’s Expansion has already leased the majority of their new apartments to incoming residents, so help will be needed right away. It is a great way for me to really hit the ground running.

Q: Describe your average initial consultation with an incoming McKnight Place resident. What should new residents expect?

MK: I spend initial meetings getting to know incoming residents so that they know and trust my intentions to make their wishes come true. I work to build the mutual trust and understanding needed to create a resident’s ideal living space, according to his or her own desires. The move is planned according to what the resident wants, never what I or my team wants. You tell us what to do and how to do it, and never the other way around.

Q: How do you begin your process of planning the move for incoming McKnight Place residents?

MK: Following initial consultations, I begin by observing how my clients are living prior to the move, asking what they would change about their current living situation, and basing any changes off what they need for an optimally comfortable living situation. The residents’ comfort is always key. I also work with residents to help with relocating, donating, or consigning any belongings.

I like to keep things neat and orderly, keeping tabs of all necessary belongings while employing an added level of flexibility during each consultation phase and subsequent move. I like to be ready for anything, should a resident change their mind regarding any aspect of the move.

Q: What sort of interior design options do residents have as they move into McKnight Place?

MK: In an effort to make them feel as at-home as possible, we encourage our new residents to take control in making their new apartments as much or as little like their previous homes as possible. Residents are entitled to customizing their new apartments just about any way they please, whether it’s by adding decorations, changing carpeting, painting, or adding built-in amenities. We will do everything we can to help you create your ideal home.

Q: What are residents most surprised by about the moving process once they’re all moved in?

MK: Though incoming residents may initially be apprehensive about their move, ultimately, the majority of them end up saying they wish they had made the move earlier. I make sure to convince each resident that their happiness is at the heart of every decision we make together as they move into McKnight Place, and, ultimately, I believe that shows.

Q: What involvement do incoming residents have in the actual moving day process?

MK: Incoming residents have the option of being involved in the actual move of their belongings or leaving it to me and my moving crew. These decisions, as well as all other decisions during the moving process, are made according to the discretion and comfort of the residents. I use a trusted crew of experienced, patient movers who know McKnight Place backwards and forwards, and who listen to the residents’ needs.

Q: What is the most important thing to make your clients aware of during the planning and move processes?

MK: I understand that, for the majority of incoming residents, this move is unlike any other move in their life. And that’s why I want it to be perfect for each and every resident. I want incoming residents to know they’re not alone in this move — that they have a solid support system, a helping hand, and a team of friends at McKnight Place.

Q: What has been the most rewarding aspect of your job?

MK: Throughout all of my years, I count myself extremely lucky to not only do something I truly love, but to also make a great many friends through doing it. I have worked for and with some of the most incredible people I’ve met in my life, and for that, I am truly grateful.
